Wilton, NH - PEP Direct, the Wilton N.H.-based direct marketing company,
has found a way to be more environmentally friendly: Enviro-Fuelcubes.
The International Paper Products Corporation (IPP), with whom PEP Direct has
recently formed a partnership, produces this alternative biomass fuel
product. Through this new relationship, PEP direct will decrease the
amount of waste sent to landfills by approximately 102 tons per month, or
1,224 per year.
PEP Direct has had a successful recycling program for years; however, a
lot of the waste the company is producing is non-recyclable. Items
such as label stock, adhesive, foil and wood pallets were being added to the
growing landfills. Doug Wright, the Vice President of Operations,
decided it was time to look into a way to dispose of these materials in a
way that would be kinder to the environment.
According to Wright, "We were looking for a method to better dispose of
our non-recyclable materials. IPP offered us the most cost-effective
way to remove items like shrink wrap, foil, label stock, adhesives, and even
plastic water bottles from our facility while, more importantly, providing
us a avenue to focus on being more environmentally aware."
The Westfield, Mass.-based biomass full company offered to take away PEP
Direct's non-recyclable materials at approximately one third of the cost the
direct mail company was paying to have the waste shipped to a landfill.
Once collected, the materials are compacted into cubes, and burned instead
of fossil fuels. It is a cleaner burning material, which reduces
greenhouse gas emissions.
IPP also offered to educate the PEP Direct staff about what can and
cannot be sent to IPP, as well as provide signage for receptacles.
Items that were previously being thrown away are now being turned into a
product that reduces greenhouse gas emissions when burned. These items
include: non-recyclable paper, coated paper, paper-based products,
plastics, wood materials and packaging and shipping materials.
PEP Direct has been running the new program for a month now.
According to reports Wright has received from IPP, PEP Direct has provided
the "cleanest" shipment of materials from a start-up program. In that
month, IPP has collected approximately 13 tons of waste.
